With rums being produced from a vast range of source regions from Trinidad to Cuba, having a special blend developed right here in Jamaica is indeed an international honour. And with global rum prices ranging from US$70 to an eye-watering US$2,400 per bottle, the distinction of winning a global taste test can have serious and positive economic implications for the rum brand.
And so it is with no small amount of pleasure that Appleton Estate announced that its Appleton Estate Joy Anniversary Blend, a rare 25-year-old limited edition rum landed a place in Distiller’s Top 2017 Spirits of the Year and was named the Rum of the Year 2017.
The rum was actually part of a career celebration. Last year, in honour of the illustrious Joy Spence’s 20th anniversary as master blender, Appleton launched its Appleton Estate Joy Anniversary Blend, a rare 25-year-old limited edition rum.
Based on its rich and sweet flavour profile and its unique tasting notes, the blend received raving reviews from top-class critics.
“For my anniversary blend, I simply set out to create the rum that I’d like to sip while watching the colours of my garden change in the warm glow of the Jamaican sunset,” said Joy Spence.
“It includes two rum marques which are of particular sentimental significance to me: The first of these marques was laid down to age in 1981, which is the year I joined the Appleton Estate team, and the second is my favourite marque of pot still rum. The final blend is a wonderful rum that I hope will become a cornerstone of my legacy.”
The Appleton Estate rum distillery is found in Nassau Valley, St Elizabeth. This is also where The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience (JSAERE) is located.
