The National Minimum Wage is to go up from $6,200 to $7,000 per 40-hour work week, representing a 13 percent increase.

The minimum wage for security guards is also to be increased, moving from $8,854 to $9,700.

Both rates are to take effect on August 1, 2018.

The announcement was made by Labour Minister Shahine Robinson during her contribution to the Sectoral Debate a short while ago.

“We have reviewed the recommendations, we have taken into account the stability of the Jamaican economy, the rate of inflation and the economic circumstances of the workers as well as the ability of the employers to absorb an increase,” said Robinson.

She argued that the rates are only a benchmark and encouraged employers to pay more if they have the resources.

She added, “Mr Speaker, I have just announced an increase in the minimum wage for security guards, but I must point out that numerous concerns have been raised and we must therefore take a serious look at what is happening in the industry”.
