Sprint star, Ambassador Dr Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been booked to deliver the keynote address at the 28th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Actuarial Association (CAA) under the theme ‘Running the Risk’.

The Jamaican Olympic sprint legend, turned, among other things, businesswoman and philanthropist, will join a host of distinguished speakers at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in St Andrew from November 29 through 30.

According to president of the CAA, Janet Sharp, the prestigious two-day event is a great opportunity for everyone, not just actuaries. “The conference brings together actuaries and individuals from the financial sector and other industries with thought-provoking discussions on global megatrends, led by professionals from across the world. It is a robust networking event known to forge strong regional and global professional alliances. We are excited and are looking forward to delving into topical issues of concern to all,” Sharp shared.

Fraser-Pryce, who will present on day one of the conference, admits that though outside of her professional purview, the whole issue of risk is very relatable and a subject matter which could be applicable in most arenas.

“People often think of actuarial science and, in particular, risk as something far outside the realm of regular day-to-day living; but the truth is, it is something that is applicable and very relevant to all of us. An actuary is someone who measures and manages risk and uncertainty. I certainly know I have had to measure and manage risk and uncertainty in my capacity as an athlete,” said the sprint sensation.

Fraser-Pryce will be supported by esteemed international speakers which include principal of Property and Casualty at Eckler Limited, Cynthia Potts; president and managing director of Greenhouse Insurance, Farron Blanc; Director of the HEU Centre for Health Economics at The University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Professor Karl Theodore; the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA), Helen Gregson.

The shortlisted speakers will be joined by other esteemed actuaries and professionals from around the world, who will address global topics affecting all stakeholders. Additionally, on the day before the conference, the IFoA will co-host a workshop with the CAA on professionalism; and members of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and International Association of Consulting Actuaries (IACA) will also contribute to a panel session on the ‘Role of Actuaries in Public Policy’.
