KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) says yesterday’s strike action by some taxi operators and Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus drivers has exposed deficiencies in the country’s public transportation system and resulted in the loss of productivity in the business sector.
Hundreds of commuters were inconvenienced after JUTC drivers in sections of Kingston and St Andrew, Spanish Town, and Portmore withdrew their services over the shooting death of their colleague.
Likewise, taxi operators in Duhaney Park, St Andrew parked their vehicles in protest against the killing of a taxi driver, allegedly by a JUTC driver.

Expressing alarm over what it said is “the wanton disregard for law and order that is becoming the norm in Jamaica,” the PSOJ issued a statement this afternoon, calling for the development of a medium- to long-term policy to prevent a recurrence of the challenges faced yesterday by the commuting public.
The organisation said the disruption in the sector should “catalyse all Jamaicans to actively play their part in reversing this pervasive culture of lawlessness”.
PSOJ President, Howard Mitchell, also reiterated his calls for a cohesive effort by civil society groups and the political directorate to arrest the disorder in society.
