ONCE again, government agencies failed to keep the death toll on the roads below their prescribed targets.
At the close of the year, 327 Jamaicans lost their lives on the island’s roads. This figure is 87 more than the 240 set by the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) last year. Dr Lucien Jones, NRSC vice-chair, said if the government fast-tracked electronic survelliance it would assist in lowering the toll.
Kenute Hare, director of the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Works, said blatant driver misbehaviour contributed to many of these deaths.
