KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) and the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) are calling on Justice Minister Mark Golding to consider granting a national amnesty for people with outstanding traffic tickets.
In a press release Tuesday, the transport groups said that with the soon to be implemented new Road Traffic Act, such an amnesty for a period of 100 days would allow for a clean bill of operation, education and enforcement of the new Act.
“One of the main concerns in the public transport sector is the inability of persons to pay the fines which pile up over a period and this allowed operators to want to elude the police on the road, which in most case end up in accidents,” the release said.
The groups said that if the new Road Traffic Act is designed to reduce traffic accidents as a prevention tool, then a call on the State and relevant agencies to seriously consider such an amnesty for a three-month period before the implementation of the Act must be made.
