Grant says preliminary reports suggest there was minimal damage to the agricultural sector overall from the recent rains.
However, he says vegetable and livestock farmers in Clarendon, St Thomas and Portland have suffered damage.
He says as a result, these farmers will need assistance to restore their farms and he’s suggesting that a national insurance scheme would be the ideal vehicle for providing the kind of help they need.
Grant says this would reduce the burden on the national coffers.
The JAS president says the government should therefore fast-track the legislative framework that is needed for the establishment of such a scheme.
