The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) is hoping trade unionists in the Senate will help in its fight to have the Government contribute to the public sector pension scheme when it is implemented.
Public sector unions have been on a collision course with the Government since Finance Minister Audley Shaw told the parliament in April that the government would not be making a contribution to the new pension scheme at this time.
The government is moving to have public sector workers contribute to their pensions, but unions believe the scheme will not be viable without the Government’s contribution.
The bill to implement the scheme has already been approved by the House of Representatives, but head of the JCTU, Helene Davis Whyte is hoping trade unionists in the Senate will advance the group’s cause when the bill is debated there.
