Information Minister Ruel Reid has indicated that the government has retained a consultant to look into the feasibility of establishing a National Health Insurance Plan.

Reid told a post-Cabinet press briefing today that Cabinet has approved a contract to Sanigest International valued at more than $722,000.

He said the project will run for six months.

Asked about the government’s vision for the health scheme, the information minister said it would be premature to disclose any information at this time.

The government is currently working on developing a framework to address the issue of funding for public healthcare.

Jamaicans currently enjoy free health care and many have criticised the policy arguing that it has created greater financial burden on the public health system.
