A Caribbean climatologist has suggested that there could be a correlation between the increase in temperatures and health problems in the region although there is no empirical data.
Cedric Van Meerbeeck says the Barbados-based Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology has started gathering data on heat sensation and can now provide a three-month forecast of the heat levels for Caribbean countries.
Van Meerbeeck says many health professionals are seeing more illnesses as temperatures rise, but there is no centralised database with information on regional heat levels to associate with the illnesses.
Van Meerbeeck said the aim is to provide improved climate and health data to give regional health sectors valuable information.
