Electric vehicles have significant potential to lower transport costs for consumers and businesses, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving local air quality and stimulating economic growth and sustainability. As such, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) and the United States Agency for International Development Caribbean Clean Energy Program are collaborating to stage a one-day Electric Vehicle Seminar at Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston this Wednesday, September 27.

The seminar will bring together key stakeholders related to the promotion, uptake, and proliferation of electric vehicles in Jamaica. It will also be a forum for learning from international and regional experts. At the end of the seminar JPS will lead a working group to continue the discussions around increasing electric vehicle deployment in the country.

The seminar will focus on a broad spectrum of issues, including the current state of the technology for electric vehicles, its suitability for islands, and a financial analysis of comparative costs of electric vehicles and traditional vehicles, among others.

Key speakers to address the seminar include JPS President & CEO Emanuel DaRosa; the former manager of the Plug-In Electric Vehicle Programme for the US Defense Department, Dr Camron Gorguinpour; executive director at Empowered Caribbean Communities, Dr Gary Jackson; and representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Mining, Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology, Jamaica’s automotive sector, among others.

The seminar will be streamed live on JPS’s Facebook page at facebook.com/myjpsonline.
