The Clarendon Municipal Corporation (CMC) says an estimated 5,000 people were affected by the floods and it has begun to provide relief.
The CMC says at least 1,000 homes were flooded by the heavy rains that pelted the parish over the last two days.
Among the communities most affected by the rains are: Western Park, Bucks Common, Bucks Haven, Denbigh, Manchester Avenue, Alan Street, Mineral Heights, Palmetto Pen, Nineteen Miles, Palmer’s Cross, Sandy Bay, Milk River and Bucknor, among other areas.
In some instances, residents had to be rescued from their homes by swimmers, as flood waters rose rapidly. Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh says at least 200 mattresses have been received from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) for distribution. Food items were also received.
The items are to be distributed from a centralised location.
