Kingston, Jamaica, August 27, 2024 The Insurance Association of Jamaica will be hosting a business conference on September 11-12 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The Conference will be held under the theme “Navigating Risks in the 21st Century: Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, and Fraud.”

Sharon Donaldson, President of the Insurance Association of Jamaica, (IAJ) stated “last month Jamaica experienced damage to the agricultural sector and the energy infrastructure by Hurricane Beryl. The peak of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is still ahead. Projections continue to forecast an above active season due to warming ocean temperatures caused by climate change. Given the range of threats facing the insurance industry and by extension, Jamaica’s economy, this conference is both timely and critical.”

It will spotlight key themes such as Climate Change and Catastrophic/ Peril Insurance, Reinsurance – The Average Clause and Catastrophe Excess, Artificial Intelligence and Data Privacy and leveraging technology to manage fraud. Richard Byles, Bank of Jamaica Governor will be the keynote opening speaker. The Hon. Dr. Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service will be the keynote opening speaker on September 12, the 36th anniversary of the devastating passage of Hurricane Gilbert. He will share his perspective on “Hot New World: The Climate Crisis and the Caribbean.”

Kishan Khoday, UNDP’s Resident Representative for the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Turks & Caicos, and John Plevin, Senior Financial Sector Specialist and Actuary at the World Bank will provide an outlook on Climate Change and Catastrophic Insurance. Professor Michael Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the UWI, will break down the science of Climate Change.

The conference will also examine the challenges and solutions posed by Jamaica’s aging population. Sanya Goffe, President of the Pension Industry Association of Jamaica, will provide valuable insights on Future-Proofing Pensions and Navigating the AI Revoution.

IAJ hosts Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change and Fraud

The conference will provide a platform for stakeholders to present and discuss issues, policies, and state-of-the-art solutions for efficient, climate smart, sustainable, insurance products; and promote insurance literacy. It will also highlight the importance of insurance in a world of increasing risks.

The conference aims to attract over 200 delegates from the insurance and wider financial sector as well as allied sectors. Business persons, ICT companies and professionals, policymakers, and financial sector clientele are also encouraged to attend. They can register here.

The conference will culminate with an Awards Ceremony under the theme Celebrating Service Excellence on September 12 It will recognize industry stalwarts and high performing members in the industry.
