CARD… Sagicor remains committed to fulfilling its responsibility as a company deeply rooted in the growth of our country

Sagicor Foundation says it has selected 42 students from across the island to receive 26 tertiary and 16 secondary scholarships, as part of its overall vision to support educational development in Jamaica.

“The scholarships are renewable for the duration of the students’ studies at their respective levels. University scholarships are renewable up to four years, while high school scholarships are up to five years,” the foundation explained in a news release.

After receiving over 600 applications, Sagicor shortlisted and selected recipients at the tertiary level based on academic performance, financial need, community involvement, and student leadership.

“With an investment of up to $250,000 per student, per academic year, the 2017 scholarship programme will see students from diverse backgrounds, with a wealth of potential, receiving scholarships to attend The University of the West Indies Mona; University of Technology, Jamaica; Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts; Mico University College; Caribbean Maritime Institute; Northern Caribbean University; and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Of the 16 GSAT scholarship awardees, two are the champion boy and girl from this year’s Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA)/Sagicor National Athletics Championships. The GSAT scholarship is valued at $50,000 annually for five years.

“Sagicor remains committed to fulfilling its responsibility as a company deeply rooted in the growth of our country, and what better way to do so than through assisting many hard-working students to achieve their dreams,” the release quotes Ingrid Card, executive director, Sagicor Foundation.

The scholarship programme goes beyond just tuition funding. As part of each tertiary scholars’ personal and professional development, they are required to volunteer with outreach project of Sagicor Foundation, such as the annual Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, as a way of encouraging the habit of giving back and ‘paying it forward’. To retain their scholarships, the recipients are expected to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 and above, while high school students are required to retain an average of 80 per cent and above.
