Candle in the Dark, a Manchester-based charity that provides for the homeless and mentally-challenged, received financial support from Sagicor Life Jamaica during an awards ceremony by the company’s Mandeville branch recently.

The Mandeville branch handed over a cheque valued at $50,000 to the charity at the ceremony, held the Moreland Estate Clubhouse in the parish, while the Sagicor Life Field Managers’ Association, which represents managers in the individual life division of the company, committed an additional $200,000.

Dale Greaves-Smith, Branch Manager, Sagicor Life, Mandeville, said the donation represents a commitment by the branch to support the work of Candle in the Dark in the community.

“We noticed that they were making a lot of difference in helping the displaced persons in Mandeville by providing them with a place to stay, food and other amenities and we could see that there were less persons on the street because of the work they have been doing. As a branch we committed to always giving back to this charity, but I am overjoyed now that the Field Managers Association has also come on board to give support to such an important cause,” she said.

Wendy Freckleton, Chairman, Candle in the Dark, expressed gratitude for the contribution, noting that through the support from corporate society and non-governmental organizations, they have been able to expand their physical infrastructure and capacity to care for the homeless.
