Workers in the hospitality sector whose jobs have been terminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be able to benefit from a new health insurance plan being offered by Sagicor Life Jamaica.

The plan, which includes coverage for doctors’ visits, prescription drugs, diagnostic services and hospitalization, is being provided for employees in the tourism sector, including those whose jobs have been terminated since March 1. Persons age 18 to 70 are eligible to enrol, along with their dependents.

Willard Brown, Executive Vice President, Sagicor Life Jamaica, Employee Benefits Division, said the plan seeks to respond to the needs of persons in the hospitality sector, some of whom have lost their employment due to the closure of tourism facilities and are at risk of losing their health insurance coverage.

“We recognise that there is a great need in this particular sector, having been so heavily impacted by COVID-19. This is a very difficult time for a lot of persons, and to lose your health coverage during a crisis of this nature, would be overwhelming. This plan gives persons in the sector the option to access health insurance for the first time, continue their current coverage or to regain coverage for themselves and their dependents,” he said.

Prospective members are required to enrol themselves using the company’s new electronic Employee Benefits Service Portal – Sagicor Connect, which is a custom-built software that allows the digitization of member enrollment for health insurance coverage, among other services.

Premiums on the policy are payable quarterly and can be made online using Sagicor Connect or at Paymaster locations. Rates start at $2,185 per month or $6,555 per quarter.

Members who have been terminated from their jobs will have 30 days from after the offer is made to facilitate the continuation of their current coverage.
