WITH the Traffic Ticket Amnesty set to end on Tuesday, motorists are being advised to make use of the time that is left to complete the process.
The three-month amnesty, which was instituted on August 2, affects tickets issued between September 1, 2010 and July 31, 2017.
“Motorists need to understand that their record will not automatically be cleared of their traffic offences. Though the demerit points attached to the tickets will be cleared, or rather, not be assigned, the motorist’s record will still reflect that they committed a traffic offence, which they have paid,” said the Ministry of National Security.
Presently, data show that the outstanding traffic tickets in the courts total $2.283 billion.
Tax Administration Jamaia confirmed that approximately $300 million has been collected since the start of the amnesty, the second in the last five years. About $340 million was collected in the first amnesty in 2012/13.
““I want to use this opportunity to urge all members of the public who believe they may have an outstanding ticket to make that call before the new Road Traffic Act comes in with harsher penalties,” said Robert Montague, national security minister, earlier this month.
He was speaking at a sitting of the House of Representatives.
